Shield
The colors yellow and green are those used for Armor. The blue, representing water, symbolizes service overseas. The green areas allude to the green fields of Europe and, with the fleur-de-lis, represent service in France during World War I and II; the yellow areas refer to combat service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.
Crest
The crest is that of the Tennessee Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 173d Tank Battalion on 15 September 1955. It was redesignated for the 109th Armor Regiment on 6 October 1960. The insignia was amended to change the symbolism on 30 September 1969.
